ABOUT THE IMAGE: This is a limited edition of hand-inked, hand-painted character cel set-ups from Walt Disney's classic animated feature Sleeping Beauty (1959). This cel set-up, "Dance in the Clouds," recreates the film's romantic finale, Sequence 21, Scenes 39 and 47, originally animated by Ken O'Brien: Although they have united to help Prince Phillip defeat Maleficent and break Sleeping Beauty's spell, the good fairies Flora and Merryweather still can't agree on the appropriate color for Princess Aurora's gown.
The unique panoramic layout of this edition echoes the wide screen Technirama® process in which Sleeping Beauty was made. On individual pieces the pink and blue color of Aurora's dress has been playfully alternated between the left and right poses as if being transformed by Flora and Merryweather. Half of the edition shows Princess Aurora's dress changing from pink to blue, and the other half of the edition shows her dress transforming from blue to pink. As a finishing touch, the legendary production designer of Sleeping Beauty, Eyvind Earle, has individually signed each piece, commemorating his involvement with the film. Mr. Earle is not the artist on the piece.
The Walt Disney Studios has recreated the artwork from this sequence using traditional animation techniques. Artists of The Walt Disney Studios Ink and Paint Department transferred the original animation drawings to each acetate cel using 24 hand-inked lines and then hand-painted the cels using 27 Disney-approved acrylic colors.
Disney artists have recreated the background. Only one half of the background is reproduced from an actual production background. Also, original layouts, sketches and frames from the film were used as reference. Color Service of Monterey Park, California has lithographically printed the background painting on premium-quality, acid-free stock.
Published by Walt Disney Art Classics in 1999, the edition consists of a general edition of 250, numbered 1/250 to 250/250, 8 publisher's proofs, numbered PP 1/8 to PP 8/8, and 15 hors de commerce, numbered HC 1/15 to HC 15/15. No additional multiples of this image, including proofs, have been produced in this or any other limited edition.
